Internships

The student internships are a stipend position. It is estimated that an internship should involve a total of 50 hours per school year. It should not take the place of volunteer activities done by clubs, etc. Upon completion of the program, interns will receive a stipend.

Interns will be selected by completing a short essay on what they bring to the internship and submitting it to the director sponsoring the internship.
Interns will have a series of short, weekly meetings with their director. The purpose of these meetings (which can be 15-30 minutes long) is to brainstorm on projects. A project that fits will have the following characteristics:
- A project of value to Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School – not busy work- but also a project that doesn’t have a tight deadline. A project that can realistically be completed within the timeframe of the internship.
Each application should include 2-3 simple goals for the internship – what the student wants to get out of the experience.
The intern will keep track of her hours and submit to the director monthly.

Internship Opportunities

Advancement/Philanthropy

Job Description: The Advancement Office Intern will receive some hands-on experience in all areas of the School’s advancement office, including fundraising, alumnae relations, parent relations, donor relations, advancement services, communications and marketing. Duties includes: updating databases, internet research, special event planning, marketing, special projects, and basic office tasks.

Requirements: Juniors or Seniors who would like to explore careers associated with fundraising and educational advancement. Candidates should have good communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for advancement events.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training Internship

Overview

The Athletic Training Intern will work under the direct supervision of the GMAHS Certified Athletic Trainer. The goal of this internship is to allow the student to gain knowledge and experience in the Athletic Training field.

Description

The athletic training student intern will have the opportunity to work with and observe the certified athletic trainer and learn the skills needed for the evaluation and treatment of injured athletes such as extremity evaluations, concussion evaluations, and basic taping techniques.

Duties

While this position will be largely observation-based, there are some duties the student intern will be responsible for, such as:

Stocking team first aid kits
Maintenance of water/ice coolers
Assisting with rehabilitation exercises
Basic first aid
Assisting with game set-up/break down

Hours

Athletic trainers in the high school setting do not work a typical 9-to-5. Be prepared for early/late practices, Saturday games, and events scheduled during school breaks. While you will not be required to cover every event as a student intern, you will be asked to cover some of these times.

Requirements

Applicants for this internship should have taken Anatomy (or be currently enrolled). Applicants should also be CPR/First Aid certified.

Counseling Center

Job Description: The intern will report the to the Counseling Center everyday at homeroom. She will deliver passes to the homeroom teachers for student meetings. The intern will inspire ideas and execute themes for the bulletin boards. She will brainstorm ideas to increase awareness of mental health/wellness themes as stated in the Red Book for the student body. The intern will provide feedback and ideas for grade level advisory classes. She will help plan and execute counseling events, for example: college fair, mock interviews, professional speakers etc. The intern will generate ideas and content for social media platforms.

Culinary

Job Description: The student intern will work with the business office and Chef Craig on various tasks pertaining to dining in our Monarch Café! These duties include assisting with safe food prep/serving for student dining as well as special events and catering. Cafeteria marketing and student feedback will also be a task of this intern. This intern is expected to assist with the Red Carpet Dinners and casserole preparing for St. Anthony’s Parish under the direction of Chef Craig and his staff.

Requirements: Senior with an interest in the culinary field

DEIJ

The Department of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice is responsible for partnering with all members of the Gwynedd community to ensure that every student feels a strong sense of connection and belonging.

We partner with internal departments responsible for staff and student recruitment to find ways to increase diversity within our building. We meet with faculty to develop practices that ensure we are being inclusive within the classroom. We look at our policies and norms to ensure that we create equitable opportunities for all students. We develop systems of accountability so that we can create a way to restore justice or repair harm, if and/or when it occurs. We also work to strengthen the competency and capacity of every community member to see, hear, acknowledge, and accept one another despite differences in background, belief, or opinion.

The DEIJ Intern will serve as a member of the DEIJ Council and will partner with the Director of DEIJ, DEIJ club officers and/or fellow interns to support the following:

Completion of tasks and activities associated with the DEIJ Strategic Plan
Development and/or delivery of seminar topics or student assemblies
Planning and execution of schoolwide events such as MLK Day of Service, Gwynedd Global Potluck and Poetry Slam
No Place for Hate promotions and events
Supporting DEIJ clubs and club officers for school wide events and initiatives
Writing copy, taking photos, designing posters, and performing other marketing and communication related tasks
Planning for the Camp Inspire Internship Program
Supporting other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Marketing and Communications

Job Description: The Marketing & Communications Internship is an opportunity for a Gwynedd student to gain hands-on experience in an area of business in which she may be interested in pursuing studies and/or career aspirations. The chosen Intern will support the Marketing and Communications Office with research, assist with projects throughout the year, learn about industry best practices, communications planning, social media, media planning and buying, photography, and videography.

Requirements:

A responsible, self-motivated Junior or Senior with an interest in this subject area.
Fine attention to detail
Strong writing skills
Graphic design and photography skills are a plus

Nursing

Description: Students are given an overview of a nursing career. They will help with the preparation for the school year, school health records, management of health concerns such as allergies and asthma. Prepare for school wide health screenings. Manage flu clinic for the faculty and staff.

Programming and monthly awareness of Health concerns.

Fundraising for AED’s and Simons Heart and become a student ambassador.

Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Department has two internship opportunities: Stage Manager and Sound Booth.

PERFORMING ARTS

Job Description: The Performing Arts Intern will be responsible for assisting with various projects within the department, including but not limited to Gwynedd Mercy Musical Theater, Monarch Stage Players, and other performances throughout the year. She will also be responsible to assist Department Chair with some organizational planning and projects.

Requirements: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior interested in the performing arts.

SOUND BOOTH

Job Description: The Sound Booth intern is a vital role for events in the Performing Arts Center. Connected to the Music Department, the Sound Booth intern is responsible for coordinating student coverage for the sound and light board for all school related and outside events in the PAC, including the Fall Musical. Working with the Music Director and Choral Conductor, the Booth intern will help develop a spreadsheet for tracking the equipment in the PAC (mics, cords, etc) and convey any information to the Music Director and/or Choral Conductor. The PAC intern must have excellent communication skills and be available during school as well as some evenings and weekends.

Requirements: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior interested in sound management and the performing arts.

School Store

Time Commitment: Not to exceed 3 hours per week

Goals: Understand all aspects of managing a small store

· Streamline Checkout with Barcodes

· Understanding Merchandising

· Understanding fashion trends

· Researching suppliers

· Setting a budget

· Reviewing and understanding Profit and Loss Reports

· Researching cost saving POS systems

End-of-Year Review Accomplishments:

· Student will provide a report explaining her goals vs. accomplishments. She will explain how she benefited from this internship and how the school store benefited from the internship. Provide suggestions for improvement of the Internship Program.

Science Department

The Science Department internship includes a variety of functions including, but not limited to:

make solutions for labs
set up/put away lab materials
decorate STEM bulletin board
research items for use in different classes (eg virtual labs, activities, project ideas, contests, etc.)
possibly help judge elementary school science fairs with an adult
work with science teachers approximately 30 -60 minutes per week; keep journal about hours worked

Sports

Assist with daily and seasonal calendar of events
Assist with distribution and collection of team uniforms
Assist with communication and promotion of daily contests

Technology Department

Job Description: The Tech Intern will support the Technology Department in a variety of functions. Duties will include but are not limited to trouble shooting computers and Smart Boards, updating computers and software. The intern will be responsible to check the copier outside the cafeteria for paper and error alerts. The intern will also gain experience in some back-end programs used in by department.

Requirements: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior with an interest in computer science or business. Candidates should have strong attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
